Official: IOC postpones Tokyo Olympics for 2021

The Tokyo Olympics, which was due to take place next summer, was postponed for a year after a unanimous decision by the Japanese government and the IOC.

Two days ago, the International Olympic Committee announced that it would decide the fate of the Olympics in the next four weeks. But after several countries refused to participate and the request of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the IOC officially postponed the race for 2021.

The XXXII Olympic Games, hosted by the Japanese capital Tokyo, have not yet been announced. They are most likely to be held in July and August, as was supposed to happen this year.

"I suggested that Thomas Bach postpone the games for one year to ensure the safety and calm of the participants. He fully agreed with the arguments presented, "Abe said.

This is the first postponement for another year of the Olympics in their recent history. In 1916, 1940 and 1944 they were not held because of the two World Wars.
