The goodbye of a legendary 'gunslinger'

The goodbye of a legendary 'gunslinger'

David Villa announced that he will stop playing soccer as soon as the season ends with Vissel Kobe. "I will retire on January 2 when we win the Emperor’s Cup in Tokyo”, he said. “I want to leave football, not football to leave me". He will leave after more than 800 games between clubs and national teams, after scoring more than 400 goals, being the top scorer in the history of the national team and 14 titles won.

Born in Tuilla on December 3, 1981, David Villa made the professional made his jump into the world of football with Sporting de Gijón as second-team player.  Real Zaragoza was the team that gave him the chance to debut as first-team player. With them, he won a Spanish Super Cup and an unforgettable Copa del Rey against Real Madrid. He scored a goal in that final. He went on to Valencia, the team he has been with the longest time, wining only one Copa del Rey.  Barça was the team he achieved glory with, especially in that Champions League final at Wembley against Manchester United in 2011 when they scored 3-1. He was only one year with Atletico de Madrid, but it was enough to win the League. He then began his world tour with Melbourne City, New York City and Vissel Kobe.

Vissel Kobe was European champion in 2008 in Vienna and world champion in 2010 in South Africa, shining as top scorer in this tournament as well. After 19 years in professional football, he will put his wisdom at the service of Queensboro FC, an American team under construction in which he has been involved as an entrepreneur.
