Formations of football are of many types. May be in names consisting of numbers that represent defenders, midfielders and attackers. Formation in a team plays a vital role in winning the match. Simply by analysing the formation, we can make sure what the team tactics can be.
 
Formation “1-1-8”
 
In the 19th-century time of football, they use only one defensive player and one midfielder and put the rest on the attack. The matches what we see today is different with minimal passing in sideways and instead of doing full attack. This kind of formation they followed because the offside rule on those times was completely different like the player was not allowed to be ahead of the ball and many.

 
Formation “2-3-5”
 
The formation from 1-1-8 to 2-3-5 happened over the long years. This formation became more famous and followed by much European football clubs. In this W-M formation was developed by Graham Chapman in 1930. It was a formation used by many teams in 1950 World Cup, although not by the winning team Uruguay.

After 1925 when offside rule changes brought into the game this formation more familiar. The Arsenal used this formation in many games and got its success.

This Formation was used by England football team in the 1966 World Cup. It was the first formation ever without wing forwards.

No formation in the football game is winning formation and no one is used in all situations. It all depends on the match day and what the managers feel his team should use that day to get victory in the game.
